Dear Auntie Kate:
I am going to marry my 1st cousin this summer. We found out that we have loved each other romantically for past 25 years but never told each other. Well, my son is studying to be a preacher and has told me that it is against the lord to marry my cousion. He gave me the scripture LEVITICUS 18:6, he says it is lord forbids these marriages. Could you give me some advice on this. He has not changed my mind against the marriage, but I wonder how I should respond.

Dear Randy,

I don't want to shake your faith, but there are many rules in Leviticus (and
the old testament in general) that modern Christianity completely ignores.
Taken out of context there's even a Bible verse that says that only women
should split firewood. "That which God has joined together, let no man put
asunder".

Unless your particular brand of Christianity maintains the discipline
required of Levite priests in the old testament, eats kosher, makes war
against Philistines, and expects mana to fall from heavan, I think your son
is taking literalism a bit too far.  And you can tell him so from me.

I would respond to his comments by reminding him that Christ came to release
us from the onerous obligations of the old testament and provide salvation
by grace and believe, rather than by practice and covenant.  Then I would
tell him to go meddle in someone else's love life. Or better yet, not to
meddle in ANYONE else's love life, ever again.

But then dear, I get particularly annoyed at people lambasting me with God's
authority to justify their trivial prejudices.

Marry. Be in love. Believe if you do. You will find that they're not
mutually exclusive.

Carrying the sword of scripture, the flame of the spirit and the firm belief
in the sanctity of the one to one God to woman (or man) relationship,

I remain,
