Dear Auntie Kate:
Problem.  Having recently fulfilled a lifetimes ambition to kiss my (1st) cousin and subsequently find myself as her live in lover, I now find myself with a dilemma at christmas.  Do I refer to her mum as Auntie or Mum? Kylie prefers me to call her Mum Auntie but I want things to go much further.  Have any of your previous writers addressed this issue?

Dear Bobby,

Well, now that's one of the most interesting questions I've had in a quite a while.

Etiquette would dictate that the formal term of closest relationship should apply. Were you married, you would refer to her your mother-in-law Couzinski. As that is not the case, the most correct title you have for her would be Aunt Jane Couzinski.  In which case, the diminutive or casual address would be Aunt Jane, or Auntie.  If you were to marry, it would be correct to use the endearment Mother, or Mum, or perhaps even Mumsie, depending on the level of formality that she prefers.

I hope that does help.  It sounds like you are all getting along wonderfully and have quite a cozy little domestic arrangement.  How sweet.

Have a wonderful Christmas!
